Tom Bonner Award
The Tom Bonner Memorial award is given to a student in a 200-level literature class who has produced an outstanding research essay on a work of literature. These high quality essays demonstrate students' ability to analyze works of literature and support their analysis with a substantial number of secondary sources.
Individual faculty teaching 200-level literature classes nominate student work, and the Tom Bonner Memorial Award Committee judges the submissions. A cash award is given to the writer of the winning essay. The student will also be recognized at the Midlands Technical College Awards Ceremony and, since 2021, has been invited to present their work at the School of English and Humanities’ Annual Student Conference.
History
Tom Bonner was a member of Midlands Tech’s English Department from 1971 to his death in December 2005. Although he taught a wide variety of courses for the department, Tom was particularly devoted to his American Literature classes. The Tom Bonner Memorial Award seeks to perpetuate his devotion to literary study.
Eligibility
The student must be a non-transient student, must have received an "A" or "A-" on the paper, and must be nominated by his or her instructor in the course. The work must be entirely the student's own, except for advice received from the instructor, tutors from Midlands Tech’s Academic Success Center, or other appropriate mentors. The paper must have been written for a 200-level course in the preceding spring, summer, or fall terms, with the award presented in the following April. A student who has won the award may not apply a second time.
