William C. Goodwin IV Memorial Art Award
Toni M. Goodwin was a long-time educator in the Midlands, serving as Chair of Palmer College’s English Department in the 1970s before Palmer College became Midlands Technical College’s Beltline Campus. By the 1990s, Dr. Goodwin was serving as faculty in the MTC English Department. When her son, William C. Goodwin IV, died as a young man of undiagnosed meningitis, she established the William C. Goodwin IV Memorial Art Award with an endowed fund to honor his memory.
Stylus student visual art and art awards date back to its first issue in 1989, but the William C. Goodwin IV Memorial Art Award first appears in the 2000-2001 issue of Stylus, going to MTC Commercial Graphics student Carl Crawford. Below are three of Mr. Crawford’s charcoal and pastel drawings from that issue:
Mr. Crawford completed his Commercial Graphics degree from MTC, and has gone on to a career as a freelance artist and guest teacher.
